Hello Students !

Welcome Back!

Great to see you again after the completion of internship.  We will continue to complete the in-class final exams and prepare for the final next week.

UNIFORMS:  Care to donate yours?  Please bring it in this week, scrub top, pants or both!

Thank you Anna and Vik for helping so much today.  You will be joined by Brianna and Irman as we continue with the same classroom managers for continuity.  We are handling several forms this week

One of the forms is the "Credit By Exam" or CBE form.  This is the one you filled out with an attached LPC application.  If you have not turned this in, I will ask that you complete a declination form.

I am so happy for all of you.  You have done an amazing job.  We will have better attendance tomorrow, and will talk about our internship experience a bit and your last few days at site.

Hi Everyone - ONE MORE DAY

Can you believe it? It all went by pretty fast.

TOMORROW, FRI. 5/25 - Get your time sheet for this week signed since you won't be returning to site next week! By the way, I have seen some of the lovely baskets filled with goodies for the staff. Fantastic! Morgan - yours rocks!

We will review the finals schedules on Tuesday, when you report to class.
AM class: 9:19 and PM class: 1:04

Also on Tuesday, 5/29 - Please bring your uniform if you care to donate. Wash, dry and fold!

If you do not have a final exam study guide, please ask a friend if you can make a copy of theirs.

Lastly, when you go to site tomorrow, remind the sites that I am open to donations of medical supply packaging, medical supplies, PDR's, CPT books, ICD9, office supplies or anything they have that is overstock or no longer being used.

Two days to go!

Hi Everyone,

As internship comes to a close, please remember to thank your site with a thank you card and some treats.  Please deliver tomorrow or Friday.  Three-day weekend, and then you return to class on Tuesday, 5/29.  We're back on the full-time schedule starting 5/29.  Your last time sheet, for the week of 5/21, will be turned in that day.  Don't forget to get it signed on 5/25!

CONGRATULATIONS to KRISTA in the PM class.  She has been hired at her site!

LHS:  If you have not sent a text yet with your hours for week of 5/14...please do so!  If any of you were absent today, please text me as well!  (just text total number of hours for that week)

GHS:  You have a special schedule tomorrow 5/24 - Arrive at school by 11:45 so you can proceed to your homeroom class and get your year book.  (SPECIAL HOMEROOM).

With the events coming up next week for GHS/LHS - these will cut into your site time once again. On 5/22, Tuesday - GHS morning and LHS afternoons may be affected. 

This is the GHS schedule for Thursday, May 24th - AM class, you may leave your site early to get to a special homeroom.  INFORM sites in advance please....anticipate the need!

Only 6 more days of CC time left

Hello Everyone,

TONIGHT:  Pleasanton Hilton/Head Injuries and Concussion Meeting  6:00 to 9:00.  All students are free.  I will give you 4 CC hours (I am including travel time and a bit more).
SIGN IN PLEASE....a.m. student Jessica has the sign in sheet. 

Thanks so much for your commitment today to following through on site gifts/goodies and a thank you card.  The p.m. class took the wire baskets, but I have extras for anyone who would like one to fill up with cookies, candy or other treats for their site.  Minerva, Raquel and Minerva --- will you call your previous sites and thank them?  That brief phone call will be so well received and thoughtful.  I will check with you on that on 5/23.

Thanks to all the students that helped at BUNCO NIGHT!  I will have some certificates for you next week.  Kelsey, let me know if you donated blood today at the American Red Cross Blood Drive at GHS.

REMINDER TO STUDENTS AND SUPERVISORS:  Make sure you get a completed, signed time sheet on 5/25 for that week!!! It is your last day at site.

GHS/LHS- Please text me about your plans for 5/22 (Every 15 Minutes).  Please text me and call your CC supervisor/staff if you will be absent from site.

Wednesday Tomorrow You Fabulous People You

Hi All,

EVALUATIONS ARE DUE TOMORROW, SIGNED BY A STAFF MEMBER OR YOUR MANAGER/SUPERVISOR.

PLEASE bring in your finals schedule tomorrow so we can get our calendars in sync.  Thank you. Print it out from your school's website.

After tomorrow, there are 6 days left of community classroom/internship. The last day is Friday, 5/25.  You will take your current hours up to 4/23 and add in the hours of the weeks of 4/23 and 5/7 so you will know how many hours you have.  You can add in hours from 5/14 and 5/15 too so you can know current and up-to-date hours count. 

Please be prepared to tell me tomorrow what you are bringing in or what you are arranging for your thank you basket/gift for site. We will have all the baskets/plans made so we can deliver the gift baskets, etc. to our sites on Thursday, May 24th and Friday, May 25th.  I will call on everyone to confirm.

Is anyone planning to attend the Head Injuries/Sports Medicine meeting at the Pleasanton Hilton tomorrow night, Wednesday, 5/16? The info is on the brochure I gave you with the helmets on the front. You will receive a certificate for your portfolio and up to 4 CC hours - if you are in attendance the entire time from 6 - 9 p.m. - I added one hour for travel time.  You must call
(925) 314-2565 to reserve a spot.  If you participate in athletics of any kind, it is free.

All we have to do now is get you ready for the final exams. You will have -

Happy Thursday !

Now, more than ever, I need you to be the best you can be at site...go the extra mile whenever you can.
As the school year comes to a close soon, I ask the sites if they are willing to take a student again next year. That's why I need you to continue to shine brightly. I count on the sites I have acquired to continue the relationship with me and the students in the program.

Nice Looking Portfolios!

Hi Everyone!

From what I have seen so far, the portfolios look outstanding...very professional.  You will get them back at the end of the school year as well as any requested letters of recommendation.  If you need your portfolio graded earlier, let me know.

Thank you Sierra, Jessica W., Anthony and Eddie.  You all worked hard today as classroom managers.

Notices/calls are going out to parents....if it appears you will not make it to the 180 hour mark.  So many of you have already passed that number.  I HAVE CC HOUR options!!!!!  Contact me.

Evaluations are due next Wednesday,  5/16 (50 pts)  - Make sure a staff member has it no later than tomorrow and please pick it up no later than Monday...no later!  I cannot give credit to late evaluations.  Once again, you have been given 4 weeks notice.  Remember to ask your supervisor to put their comments on the back.

JOURNALS: I noticed several journals were not complete.  Please work on these daily and start writing about your plans to stay in touch with your site, the benefits of having been there and any new tasks or observations.  Bring these in on the 16th and the 23rd so I can see them.

BE READY.....On the 16th we will be working on the final exam preparation.  Have your study guides ready for both the MT and the comprehensive exam.

Portfolios Due Tomorrow

Hello Students!

I can't wait to see the professional and polished portfolios!   This is your time to SHINE.. and show off your work and accomplishments.  Be sure to have a neat and professional cover sheet in the outside window of the binder.  I will give you your CPR cards and immunizations tomorrow. 200 points.  If you are even one day late turning this in, I have to call home. 

Reminder:  Please put your last evaluation and training plan near the site experience paper.  The site experience paper is three paragraphs: 1-site info/staff  2- Your responsibilities/tasks performed and
3- Benefits of internship/ROP

PRESENTATIONS:  Gerald, Daniel, Lizeth and Denise

Memorize your SOCIAL SECURITY number tonight. This info will be locked up and kept confidential at the ROP office.  Do not bring in your SS card.  I will ask you to fill out a form that is sent to the local colleges that allows you to earn college credit for having taken the Medical Occupations course, passing with an "A" or a "B" as well as the 180+ CC hours completed.

Make sure you have your final exam study guides for both MT and Comprehensive exams tomorrow.

Remember your time sheets and evaluations.  Evals are due 5/16, but I will take them tomorrow.

Cookies, Candy and Gifts

Hi Everyone,

Portfolios due Wednesday.......!!!  Last chance to call or text with assistance today and tomorrow.

Morgan, please call me regarding your site schedule.  Thank you!

SITE GIFT BASKETS:
I have purchased a special basket for each of your sites.  The problem is, these baskets are empty. Please talk to your parents about helping you fill these with gifts to be given to the staff at your site during the week of 5/21/12.  If there are more than one of you at the site, each of you can contribute items for the basket. I would like all of you to write your own thank you note.  You can also all sign one if you'd like.  Just put "Staff" on the outside of the envelope. Bring ribbon and flowers or other fun ways to decorate the basket.

Here are some suggestions:
Baked goods- cake/cookies, candy, gift cards, make a "theme" basket (movie, coffee, picnic, lotion/bath, office supplies, etc).  You may include any special craft item that you or a family member created.

The baskets stay in the classroom for now and I'd like to see these completed and ready to leave with you on Wednesday, 5/23.

For those of you needing more CC hours, I have wonderful projects that you can do from home!

1.  Children's Hospital Oakland, Family House (donations for families living there while their child is in the hospital)  Need donations of paper towels, TP, sugar, creamer (powder type), 4 gal. garbage can liners, zip lock bags - 1 gal and quart size, plastic forks and spoons, dishwasher tablets, and journal books.  Just text me your email address and I'll send you a sample donation letter to give to stores so you can get one or more of these items.

2.  Troops Direct - Items for the troops in Afghanistan.  Wish list is on the way and I will have it soon.

3.  Tri-Valley Haven - Items for teens and children.  Go on website - call for items needed.

4.  Food Bank Help -  Collect non-perishable, not-expired food.

5.  Good News Bears -  Contact them (see website) as to what you can do at home.

To to your parents, neighbors and friends.  See how many hours you can aquire through these worthy causes.

Loved the presentations!

GREAT job today on the medical terminology presentations!!! Very clever and interesting.  Next week:  Daniel L. and Gerald.

PORTFOLIOS are due on Wednesday next week, MAY 9th. Keep everything in the same order as the TOC, but feel free to add tabs/sheet protectors of other items that say great things about you! FIND A WAY to get it to me if you are going to be absent. I highly recommend that you get a recommendation letter from your site. I can walk you through typing one up for them to sign. They will probably love the idea of signing it for you!

PUT YOUR TRAINING PLAN and the LAST EVALUATION (not the one due 5/16) in your portfolio right after your site experience paper.

Evaluations DUE Wednesday, May 16th. GIVE this to your supervisor (or staff member if you have not already). ASK THEM to please put comments / questions on the back of the evaluation. Thanks.

There are now 14 CC days remaining in the month of May. End of internship: Friday, May 25th. Please meet with me if you feel you will not meet the 180 hour requirement to complete the course. I need lunch time and after school helpers.....I can help with those needed CC hours.

Soon, I will be talking to you about filling out some paperwork to allow you to earn college credit by passing this class with an "A" or a "B". More to come on that.

Hello and Happy Wednesday!

Thank you Marcella, Sierra, Anthony and Eddie for helping me today. I appreciate my classroom managers!

GHS: Are you a recipient of an academic award and were you unable to go to the award breakfast? If so, please go to academic services and ask for your certificate.

Today we worked on our portfolios. I have a new table of contents for you. For next Wednesday, 4/18, please bring in a thank you card and envelope, 20-25 sheet protectors, corrected resume, cover letter and references, certificates, etc.
Portfolio will be due on WEDNESDAY, MAY 9th. We also talked about the site binder and all the wonderful things that will go in it. More on that later.

If it is a PPT, email it to me and have it on a flash drive too (carry it with you!)

KAISER INTERNS (A.M. LIVERMORE) - all other ROP students, please be aware as well. This is the note I emailed to Kareen Knowles at Kaiser. I know you are all doing a great job, but there were a few complaints about excessive socializing/disrupting. This behavior can jeopardize my relationship with Kaiser and eventually have you all dismissed from the site. Let's not let this happen!!! I trust all of you to continue your good work and make sure we turn this around quickly. I am not mentioning names, just be aware and report any behaviors that compromise patient care. Please know that I am aware of your incredible work there and I appreciate each and every one of you.

Talk to your site supervisor/staff. Don't try to update your training plan alone! See someone and ask them to help you add 5 to 10 additional tasks or observations. Take it up a notch! Ask to observe or perform a task under supervision that is within your scope of practice.

CMAA Conference 3/15 to 3/18

The Career Fair is here at Granada in the Student Union from 6:30-8:30 pm. This event will provide the girls with an opportunity to meet professionals workingin a wide variety of STEM careers. Optometrists, PhysicalTherapists, Engineers, Veterinarians,
Physicists, Air Force Pilots and manymore. It is also a great way for the
girls to learn about new careerpaths and practice their networking skills.

DUE 3/28: Evaluation (give to site TOMORROW). PERFECT resume, cover letter and references. Updated training plan. (we will look at these together on 3/21).

Ryan G. is helping with Tri-Valley Haven and Shepard's Gate to collect some items. Non-perishable food, cleaning products and clothes for women and children. Contact Tri-Valley Haven if you have items to donate by Friday. Tomorrow may be the deadline, but I assume they will take donations on Friday. Hey Ryan....would you call and ask them or ask at your Kaiser site?

Thanks so much everyone. The resumes are in process, the final was very thorough and I am very proud of all of you. Amazing group and I will miss you when you have to leave at the end of the year. Please recruit only the best (people like you) for my 2012-2013 class!

Welcome to T3 and the last 12 weeks of school!

Thank you classroom managers Alex and Denisse....I really had a lot for you to do this morning. Jillian and Mehul...next week I will need you to be classroom managers in the PM.

ValleyCare Scholarship folks - I need to see the progress on the scholarship no later than 3/14.

EVALUATIONS: Give to site a.s.a.p. !!! DUE on 3/28 along with your new training plan. We will go over the new and improved training plan next week!

MORE CC HOURS: Special Career Fair for Girls.......Wed. 3/14 GHS Student Union 6:30-8:30 GNB needs folks on 3/24 and my advisory committee meeting in on 4/19.

Jewelry Sale to raise money for charities - ask family and friends to donate costume jewelry, and other inexpensive jewelry, like earrings, bracelets, necklaces, etc. We will sell it at the CMAA conference on 4/28! All volunteers - please let friends and family know!

AVHS/FHS/VHS/DHS - Turn in your "final" 3/14, which is a take-home assignment for you.

Let Me See Those Resumes, Cover Letters and References!

HOMEWORK DUE TOMORROW (60 points): No last minute, messy portfolio additions! NO EMAILS. Print these out and hand them in, STAPLED in this order: COVER LETTER, RESUME, REFERENCES. Make sure all personal information at the top of each page matches and is centered. (Header) Trouble printing? Find a printer somewhere! Text me before 7:30 tonight if you are stuck, but I'll expect you to use your wonderful problem-solving skills!
Bring me typed, portfolio-ready documents.

On the cover letter, fill in the blanks as best you can so it looks ready to mail to a prospective employer. Other formats can be found on http://www.about.com/.

Need Community Classroom/Internship Hours?

Hi Everyone,

Be sure to read over the last two blog entries, 2/29 and 3/1 to ensure you are ready for next week!

For some extra CC hours, you can make out a time sheet that will help with earning some money for our charities. Please read the next section of this blog entry and let me know if you can help and I'll talk to you before you get started. You will need parent signature on your time sheet once you and I have determined what you will be doing for this project. Some of you need hours more than others. For those of you that do need hours, contact me asap!

CHARITY JEWELRY SALE - Costume jewelry, supplies welcome. Do you know anyone who has a jewelry store that can donate something? Ask Mom or other family members...do they have one or more things they can donate? All donations are welcome! We also accept jewelry that needs cleaning or is in need of repair.

We’re asking students, teachers, their families and friends to clean out overstuffed jewelry boxes or armoires! Gently used jewelry and jewelry making supplies are welcome. Do you make your own jewelry? If so, a donation or two would be appreciated.

Proceeds from the jewelry sale will benefit Tri-Valley Haven, Children’s Hospital Oakland (Family House), St. James Food Pantry, The Fred Finch Home for Developmentally Disabled Teens and the California Medical Assistants Association, a non-profit educational forum for students in health care and working medical assistants in California. Please put jewelry donations in a ziplock bags. If you have necklaces or bracelets, please wrap them carefully to prevent tangles. If you have containers or boxes for these, that would be great.
Here are some suggestions: Beads, supplies, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, ankle bracelets, working watches, rings, shoe clips, or other lovely adornments to brighten up someone’s life.
